Next was a fantastic conversation with Naomi Oreskes on the myth of the "free market" at #StanfordGSB. Oreskes deftly deconstructs the notion that a market can be disconnected from other aspects of society, and also exposes how thinkers promoting that notion have ignored foundational economic scholarship. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJV7_0BIbxo (8/10) #economics

Next was a great discussion with Guido Imbens on disentangling correlation from #causation at the #StanfordGSB. Covered here were everything were why the distinction matters practically, the impact of massive #data collection, and more. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzwtf4DN6z4 (4/8)

Next was a fantastic discussion with @timnitGebru on #AI, #ethics, and more at the #StanfordGSB. Gebru is always a must watch, and this fiery discussion is no exception - eviscerating the overhyped LLM/generative AI bubble by clearly and concisely enumerating the issues with these approaches from a variety of perspectives. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mztnETK073o&t=36s (5/7) #LLMs #AIEthics
First was a spicy panel on economic development incentives at #StanfordGSB w/Timothy Bartik, Rebecca Lester, and David Neumark. I'm always skeptical of the economic effect of tax breaks for large companies to move, and the discussion here validates that it's mostly moving jobs around for the purposes of scoring political points at long term cost. I loved hearing about some programs that work, with Grand Rapids seeming like a model to emulate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTqDF37A7RI (2/7)

Last was an economic discussion of #risk and tradeoffs in corporate #finance and beyond with Jonathan Berk and Jules van Binsbergen at the #StanfordGSB. I found the opening section on risk compelling, but take disagree somewhat with the rational, atomistic explanation of firm action and employment relationships examined in the second half https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WctKdyeblT4 (6/6)

First up was a great discussion on #privacy, #technology, and the #law with Brian Lowery, Kade Crockford, and Susie Alegre at the #StanfordGSB. The conversation gets into how and why society and regulators should care about privacy and how a focus on the right guardrails can channel innovation in positive directions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwVQqUfuV6s (2/6)

#econodon Now flying back to Paris after an amazing 3w visit at #StanfordGSB, I can say that they know how to make guests feel welcome! The paradise for market designers! Thanks to @mohammad Ravi Jagadeesan, Al Roth & Itai Ashlagi for making this short visit so nice
Next was a panel on #unions in the US with Lenny Mendonca, Valerie Hardy-Mahoney, Peter Olney, and Dave Regan at #StanfordGSB. This gets into the historical background of unionization in the US, why it should be part of #business education, and why it behooves organizations to work with unions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LTuybYewnc (4/8)

Next was a fairly spicy discussion at #StanfordGSB on #shareholder vs. #stakeholder #capitalism with Alex Edmans, Jonathan Berk, and Jules van Binsbergen. I agree more with Edmans's take here, but it's important to hear some of the arguments put against companies investing in the long-term health of society https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZuacyGLlOg (3/6)

Last was an absolute banger by Anat Admati at the #StanfordGSB on #business, #government, and #society. This is an eloquent, research-infused, irreverent dissection of a laissez-faire approach to #regulation, profits above all, and the illusion of the "free market." Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-_R9jeXMbA (9/9)
