The other personal insight I think I've had is that I may have accidentally developed empathy by figuring out ways not to trigger this phenomenon.

By intuiting what aspect of the model they had of me was true, so that I could lean into that and some of the potential friction in the relationship. The simplest version of this that I can think of is shared hobbies & interests but the reason and mechanism are in the previous posts.

It doesn't even have to be anything weird or gross. The effect is apparent as long as you suddenly don't fit into their model of you they've constructed from assumptions.

It could be something as simple as being an intelligent person with a country-ass accent. Or a logical scientist that's also interested in things without even the possibility of empirical proof.

A more common example would probably be being progressive in the South or a rural area.

Either way, it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with their preconceptions about you & the effort required to "reprogram your model".
