A post that says you can use car tint on a Sony PVM or BVM to take it from that grayish-while-off look to a more dark look akin to consumer sets where it will look much better in a lit room.
The first picture is roughly how it looks before. The second picture is how it looks after, after applying 35% VLT car window tint film. Doing this DRAMATICALLY improves the black levels of the monitor.
The car window tint can be found here, though there is likely another solution on other Amazon region stores, but this is what he used.
