An insightful quote from Oliver Creighton in his 2012 book 'Early Medieval Castles': "the slighting and desecration of a donjon could in certain instances mark the discontinuity of lordship" #slighting #archaeology #castles

One of the best examples is the destruction of Kenilworth Castle in the mid-17th century. It's not a medieval event, but the same idea of discontinuity applies.

This time next week I'll be in Penrith for the #ChateauGaillard conference. It's my first time at the CG conference and I'm incredibly excited, not least because it's the first conference since 2005 that I've seen explicitly mention #slighting.

It was very helpful for me when trying to understand where he was when he gave instructions to slight #PevenseyCastle and #KneppCastle. Having a visual component to data is so important. #slighting #castles

Fascinating example of early medieval deliberate destruction of a probable tower. Multiple methods of destruction, here infilling and burning, make the destruction more intentional.
