Yesterday was spent re-reading odds and ends of things from my childhood switching a bit between. #LloydAlexander 's The Book Of Three and #SilverLock by #JohnMyersMyers I wondered if they'd feel misogynist or racist or... all of the broken things. Silverlock wears better than I thought it might. He's dropped into the Commonwealth as a self absorbed world weary literal pig and spends his time working towards being less and less so. I'm not thrilled by how JMM deals with Robinson Crusoe's cannibals, but... regardless of your skin color, if you're supposed to be someone who takes captives and eats them (not quite the same thing as preserving the memory and qualities of the honored dead)... I guess you get to be a black hat and be run away from? As for The Book of Three, I was waiting to feel Taran (or Lloyd Alexander) was actively sexist and feel Eilonwy is getting a raw deal, but no. Taran is about as stupid as teen/tweens can be with no sense of how much bigger and more complicated the world actually is. Eilonwy is frankly smarter, but suffers some of the same poor impulse control. I find the notion that Eilonwy and Fflewdur actually let Taran lead them anyplace a little hard to swallow, but the idea they think he's right to try and reach the Sons of Don doesn't feel stupid. I haven't finished either book yet, but they're wearing better than expected. #sff
