Black cats face lower adoption rates and higher euthanasia rates despite their abundance and even potential disease resistance. Prejudice against them remains strong, leading to frequent neglect and mistreatment. Black Cat Appreciation Day hopes to stop that bias.

When you buy a dog or cat, or breed your own, you deny a shelter animal a loving and caring home; an animal that desperately needs you. You purchasing a dog or cat to be your companion, supports the breeding industry that sees animals as just a commodity. Breeding your own, still contributes to the over-population of these animals. Both buying and breeding your own, leads to more healthy animals being euthanised needlessly in shelters.
A true animal lover would never buy or breed an animal to be their companion. These animals are not here just to provide you with companionship, unconditional love and years of joy. If you choose to have an animal in your life, it must be a symbiotic relationship, it must be for the benefit of the animal, it must be to show kindness to that animal; otherwise, it is just plain old exploitation masked behind the idea of love.
So if you buy or breed, can you really call yourself an animal lover?
