The Medieval Myth Still Hurting Suicidal Girls A teenage girl refused care for months. Why? Because multiple professionals told her that her suicidal thoughts were “just hormones.” Not only is there zero evidence-based research supporting the idea that hormonal changes cause teenage girls to become suicidal. It’s also deeply dismissive. And honestly? It’s medieval medicine dressed up in modern language. She wasn’t taken seriously. She felt blamed for her own pain. And she lost all trust in mental health care. This isn’t a small mistake. It’s a barrier to treatment. It’s avoidable harm. When someone is suicidal, they need to be met with: • curiosity, • humility, • partnership, • and care not explanations that sound scientific, but aren’t. If anything, I would have loved to hear something like: “I don’t know why this is happening, but your distress is real. And I want to work with you to figure this out together. You deserve help, and I’m here to support you in getting it.” That level of honesty builds trust. Trust builds safety. And safety is what saves lives. We need less certainty. We need less ego. We need more humanity. Teenage girls deserve better than outdated, sexist assumptions disguised as clinical wisdom. They deserve care grounded in evidence, connection, and respect. Always. #SuicidePrevention #TeenMentalHealth #Parents #MentalHealth #YouthSuicidePrevention #EvidenceBasedCare | 12 comments on LinkedIn

Distilled Thoughts on Hydrogen | Paul Martin | 34 comments

From time to time, hydrogen proponents ask my why I hate hydrogen. I explain to them that I don't hate an element on the periodic table- though I do give boron the side-eye from time to time. I also explain that it would be a very weird choice of career on my part, to spend it working with hydrogen, all the way from my undergrad. I've made and used and handled and stored hydrogen for many decades in innumerable projects. I still work with it today. In fact, I LOVE hydrogen. I love what you can do with it. Things that you can't do with any other molecule. I love it so much that I think it's stupid to waste it as a fuel. I'm also aware that vast amounts of public money are being wasted on the false notion of a "hydrogen economy", predicated on wasting hydrogen as a fuel- a duty for which its properties are utterly unsuited. Hydrogen as a fuel is a bad concept. It's wrong in ways that innovation simply can never make sense of. So yeah, I feel strongly about all that. Strongly enough to co-found the Hydrogen Science Coalition four years ago, a not for profit dedicated to providing a science based view on hydrogen and its role in decarbonization, free of any financial interest one way or another. I have the knowledge, and also the freedom to share it without worrying about what employers or clients will think. I feel that gives me a responsibility to speak out. Fortunately, HSC has been successful, reaching millions and measurably moving the needle on public policy in relation to hydrogen. If you haven't seen it, here's my summary article on the topic. It contains a few paragraphs on each topic, with a link to a whole article which gives the details. Since nobody pays me to write this stuff, I'd appreciate if you can share it. https://lnkd.in/ghbTSN9p | 34 comments on LinkedIn

FTA Safety Advisory 25-1: Reducing Rail Trespassing and Suicide Events | Colleen Kelly

Nearly 300 individuals die by suicide each year on the U.S. rail system. Suicide-related incidents, including intentionally jumping, walking, or lying in front of trains, have been increasing. In response, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has issued Safety Advisory 25-1 (SA 25-1). This advisory recommends that State Safety Oversight Agencies (SSOAs) instruct Rail Transit Agencies (RTAs) within their jurisdiction to implement their Safety Management System (SMS) to: 👉 Identify hazards related to rail trespassing and suicide events, 👉 Perform safety risk assessments, 👉 Identify safety risk mitigations, and 👉 Utilize safety performance monitoring and measurement procedures to evaluate the effectiveness of mitigations #SuicidePrevention #RailroadSafety https://lnkd.in/e2ZxUZaK

Can we really afford to ignore misinformation? This article argues no. Drawing on evidence across public health, democracy, and climate communication, the paper shows that misinformation is more widespread (and more influential) than some recent claims suggest. Even when effects appear small in isolation, they can meaningfully shape beliefs, intentions, and behavior at scale. The takeaway is nuanced but firm: we shouldn’t panic, but we also shouldn’t minimize. Misinformation isn’t the only driver of behavior, but looking past it risks repeating familiar mistakes. This work comes from an interdisciplinary team spanning psychology, communication, and the history of science:  Ullrich Ecker, Li Qian Tay, Jon Roozenbeek, Sander van der Linden, John Cook, Oreskes Naomi, and Stephan Lewandowsky.
