The Medieval Myth Still Hurting Suicidal Girls A teenage girl refused care for months. Why? Because multiple professionals told her that her suicidal thoughts were “just hormones.” Not only is there zero evidence-based research supporting the idea that hormonal changes cause teenage girls to become suicidal. It’s also deeply dismissive. And honestly? It’s medieval medicine dressed up in modern language. She wasn’t taken seriously. She felt blamed for her own pain. And she lost all trust in mental health care. This isn’t a small mistake. It’s a barrier to treatment. It’s avoidable harm. When someone is suicidal, they need to be met with: • curiosity, • humility, • partnership, • and care not explanations that sound scientific, but aren’t. If anything, I would have loved to hear something like: “I don’t know why this is happening, but your distress is real. And I want to work with you to figure this out together. You deserve help, and I’m here to support you in getting it.” That level of honesty builds trust. Trust builds safety. And safety is what saves lives. We need less certainty. We need less ego. We need more humanity. Teenage girls deserve better than outdated, sexist assumptions disguised as clinical wisdom. They deserve care grounded in evidence, connection, and respect. Always. #SuicidePrevention #TeenMentalHealth #Parents #MentalHealth #YouthSuicidePrevention #EvidenceBasedCare | 12 comments on LinkedIn
