Distilled Thoughts on Hydrogen...
Distilled Thoughts on Hydrogen | Paul Martin | 34 comments
From time to time, hydrogen proponents ask my why I hate hydrogen. I explain to them that I don't hate an element on the periodic table- though I do give boron the side-eye from time to time. I also explain that it would be a very weird choice of career on my part, to spend it working with hydrogen, all the way from my undergrad. I've made and used and handled and stored hydrogen for many decades in innumerable projects. I still work with it today. In fact, I LOVE hydrogen. I love what you can do with it. Things that you can't do with any other molecule. I love it so much that I think it's stupid to waste it as a fuel. I'm also aware that vast amounts of public money are being wasted on the false notion of a "hydrogen economy", predicated on wasting hydrogen as a fuel- a duty for which its properties are utterly unsuited. Hydrogen as a fuel is a bad concept. It's wrong in ways that innovation simply can never make sense of. So yeah, I feel strongly about all that. Strongly enough to co-found the Hydrogen Science Coalition four years ago, a not for profit dedicated to providing a science based view on hydrogen and its role in decarbonization, free of any financial interest one way or another. I have the knowledge, and also the freedom to share it without worrying about what employers or clients will think. I feel that gives me a responsibility to speak out. Fortunately, HSC has been successful, reaching millions and measurably moving the needle on public policy in relation to hydrogen. If you haven't seen it, here's my summary article on the topic. It contains a few paragraphs on each topic, with a link to a whole article which gives the details. Since nobody pays me to write this stuff, I'd appreciate if you can share it. https://lnkd.in/ghbTSN9p | 34 comments on LinkedIn
