I learned recently that #ShadowsOfTheEmpire on #n64 was part of a larger campaign to renew interest in #StarWars before the remastered trilogy. It was basically everything but a movie, and even had a soundtrack. The N64 game's OST takes some tunes from the album, but not in entirety and with the N64's trademark compression.
My favorite track on the album is probably Xizor's theme. If you played the n64 game, the familiar bit from the penultimate level starts around the 3 minute mark. The music is from Joel McNeely, not John Williams, but it stands on its own. It still heavily uses leitmotifs, but unlike the films, it can dwell on them and explore more musically.
I don't think this album gets enough attention. It has a lot of great moments and memorable compositions, doing something new with the source material instead of route mimickry.
