SURFsara's boost with Bull sequana

#FolkloreThursday: `The #duck was the #animal of #Sequana, goddess of the source of France’s river Seine, who was often depicted sailing in a boat whose prow was shaped into a duck’s head. Birds are often symbols of #Celtic divinity, especially of goddesses.`

Okay, now I'm starting to see more and more that Sequana was Dionysus's daughter.

People, stop it. Stop repeating whatever you read to sound more knowledgeable about something than you are.

First, if she was to be his daughter, please name him Bacchus, not Dionysus.

Also, Sequana was a Gallic goddess, and her myth predates the Roman invasion of Gaul and has no link whatsoever to Greek Mythology.

So, while there is a chance that the Romans retconned her story, I haven't found any trace of it. She's not related to Bacchus. They're not even from the same religion.

However, one nice tidbit, is that the myth of Jesus Christ draws some motifs from the myth of Dionysus/Bacchus. Just saying.

Think of the #Seine and you may picture Notre Dame, the Louvre, a ballet of boats under bridges next to the Eiffel Tower. “Under the sky of Paris/runs a joyous river,” sang Edith Piaf…pop songs have certainly ensured the river’s international celebrity status. Yet few people know about the #GalloRoman goddess for which the Seine is named. #Celtic…healing deity #Sequana was honored in cult worship after the #Roman conquest of #Gaul in the 1st century…
Meet the ancient goddess of the Seine River: Sequana

The opening ceremony for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics will take place on the fabled French waterway. But did you know it was named for a Gallo-Roman deity?
