"Longtime CBS correspondent Scott Pelley lived many workers’ fantasy: Telling your boss off

As if Scott Pelley’s years in a glamorous, globetrotting, seven-figure dream job weren’t enough, he’s pulled off one more thing to stir your envy: a cutting takedown of his boss that went loudly public.

The '60 Minutes' correspondent’s searing rebuke of CBS management this week, in which he questioned his bosses’ credentials and motives, may have ended in his firing, but amounted to the sort of mouthing-off that workplace peons typically only fantasize about.

'That’s the American dream — to be able to tell off your boss and walk out the door,' says Zach Tyra, a 40-year-old data analyst from Jones, Oklahoma, who found a kindred spirit in the newsman, recalling his own experience with a former boss he said was clueless. 'I couldn’t do what Scott Pelley did because I didn’t have the safety net or the resources or the network that he has. I couldn’t tell my boss to stick it. I just had to sit there and eat it.'

Pelley’s message may have been delivered in the measured baritone of someone polished by decades on the airwaves. But his backtalk stirred many who’ve felt the simmering rage of feeling a clueless boss was turning their days into a nightmare.

'It’s also kind of weird, like, Pelley isn’t some blue-collar hero. There’s a wide gap between, like, Pelley and your local everyday guy down at the hardware store,' Tyra says. 'But I think everyone can relate to standing up for what they believe.'"

Former CBS correspondent lived many workers' fantasy: Telling off boss

Scott Pelley may have lost his job after publicly blasting CBS management. But for many workers, he lived out a fantasy. In a staff meeting this week, the longtime “60 Minutes” correspondent questioned the qualifications of top executives and accused them of undermining the storied news program. While his bosses dismissed him, saying he exhibited “remarkable incivility and contempt," many others are cheering Pelley, saying it was like watching a fantasy play out after years of biting their tongues around bosses they viewed as clueless.

"Scott Pelley Fires Back After ‘60 Minutes’ Ouster: ‘The Collapse of Values at the Top Has Become Untenable’

Scott Pelley said he no longer recognizes '60 Minutes' in the months following the takeover of CBS News by Paramount Skydance, and accused the executive set in charge of the news division of 'incompetence and unprofessionalism' that have 'wreaked havoc for months.

Pelley, in his first statement since CBS News announced his termination Tuesday evening, said Paramount Skydance 'is casting this legend aside' as it weakens the newsmagazine 'apparently to curry favor with the Trump administration.'

A CBS News spokesman did not respond immediately to a query seeking comment.

CBS News terminated the '60 Minutes' veteran after the journalist and executives felt they could not find a way to work together following a heated public argument Monday between Pelley and Nick Bilton, the former tech journalist installed last week by editorial chief Bari Weiss, who also dispatched the show’s most senior producers as well as correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega. Pelley is the fourth '60 Minutes reporter to leave the venerable newsmagazine since February, leaving just a trio — Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim — to handle assignments as the show prepares to get stories ready for its 59th season in the fall.'
