"Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim say they’ll stay at ‘60 Minutes’

'We don’t want to see ‘60 Minutes’ die,' the show veterans said, after CBS News boss Bari Weiss fired several correspondents and top producers.

'We have had a hard time deciding whether to stay,' the three wrote in a memo to their colleagues at the program, before adding: 'We don’t want to see ‘60 Minutes’ die.'

They wrote that they were still 'deeply upset by the firings' of executive producer Tanya Simon and high-ranking producer Draggan Mihailovich, whom they called 'strong leaders who everyone respected.' Their colleague Scott Pelley was fired earlier this week after he challenged the newsmagazine’s new executive producer over the recent firings.

The longtime correspondents said that 'as far as we can tell,' those leaders were fired because 'they fought for our ‘60 Minutes’ values and stood up to protect our independence and integrity.'

With a shellshocked staff and several open correspondent offices, newly appointed executive producer Nick Bilton is trying to find a way forward for '60 Minutes.'

The past week of dreadful headlines has shown that many people doubt Bilton and Bari Weiss can uphold the newsmagazine’s reputation. Some believe that’s by design — that the show has been poisoned on purpose. Scott Pelley sure thinks so.

A CBS spokesperson rebutted that in a new statement yesterday. But the real statement will come in September when the new season of '60 Minutes' premieres.

'We’re acutely aware that the premiere has to be a banger,' a well-placed CBS source remarked to me.

Right now, it remains unclear whether the three remaining correspondents — Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim — will return for Season 59. The CBS News management team is working hard to convince them to stay."

Scott Pelley said he no longer recognizes '60 Minutes' in the months following the takeover of CBS News by Paramount Skydance, and accused the executive set in charge of the news division of 'incompetence and unprofessionalism' that have 'wreaked havoc for months.

Pelley, in his first statement since CBS News announced his termination Tuesday evening, said Paramount Skydance 'is casting this legend aside' as it weakens the newsmagazine 'apparently to curry favor with the Trump administration.'

A CBS News spokesman did not respond immediately to a query seeking comment.

CBS News terminated the '60 Minutes' veteran after the journalist and executives felt they could not find a way to work together following a heated public argument Monday between Pelley and Nick Bilton, the former tech journalist installed last week by editorial chief Bari Weiss, who also dispatched the show’s most senior producers as well as correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega. Pelley is the fourth '60 Minutes reporter to leave the venerable newsmagazine since February, leaving just a trio — Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim — to handle assignments as the show prepares to get stories ready for its 59th season in the fall.'

A new investigation alleges Israel’s Education Ministry monitored and disciplined mainly Arab teachers over political speech and pro-Palestinian views.

Israel’s Education Ministry operated a secretive surveillance body that monitored teachers over political speech, with Palestinian educators emerging as the primary targets, an investigation by Israeli newspaper Haaretz alleges.

The report detailed the activities of an internal body known as the 'Incitement Committee', which allegedly gathered information on teachers’ social media activity, monitored political statements, and recommended disciplinary action against educators accused of criticising the government or expressing pro-Palestinian views.

The committee has investigated around 160 educators since the beginning of the judicial overhaul crisis in 2023, with roughly half of the cases deemed by officials to involve alleged incitement to violence or racism, the investigation states.

Most of those targeted were Arab teachers, though some Jewish educators who opposed the government or Israel’s war on Gaza were also investigated."
