#Schwann cells are known to act as an insulating layer around nerve fibers. They protect and provide nutrients to #neurons. Yet a study by the labs of @GaryRLewin1 and James Poulet has shown that specific types of Schwann cells are also actively involved in detecting pain and touch.

Pain and touch sensations require Schwann cells

Special receptor cells under the skin enable us to feel pain and touch. But Schwann cells also play a key role in detecting such stimuli, researchers at the Max Delbrück Center report in “Nature Communications.” This discovery opens new avenues for pain therapy.

Finished boxing up dozens and dozens of #vinylLPs and CDs, mostly #classicalmusic, as we continue to #downsize. Back in the 50s and 60s, it was so much fun to go to #WebsterRecords with my list in hand. All the records were in their bins according to the #Schwann catalog number.

When the piece I wanted matched with the orchestra, composer, conductor, and soloist, it was cause for excitement. Flipping through the bin and finding the catalog number was, I must say, quite rewarding.
