In Old English the word for the season of spring is 'lengten', which is where the word for the Christian season of lent comes from. It means lengthen, marking the increase in days-length.
Thinking of imbolc as the start of the season of lengthening days feels more apt. Spring is not necessarily warmer weather, youthful sunshine, daffodils and baby animals. It is the transition between winter and summer, the lengthening days, the sun lifting higher in the sky and growing in strength. This is the catalyst which then brings those traditional markers of later spring.
So today I welcome the start of Lengten, the longering time.
