Honoring an old tradition with new materials. 🌿✂️

St. Brigid's Cross is one of Ireland's oldest symbols — traditionally woven from rushes on February 1st to mark Imbolc and welcome in the light of spring. I made mine from paper, and honestly? The folding is almost meditative.

Four steps. Two hands. One very ancient symbol.

Have you ever made one? 👇

Happy #LunarNewYear and Lunar #Imbolc (new moon in Aquarius) to all who celebrate!

Very late happy Imbolc! Here is a part of my Imbolc / late Winter altar. How are you? Did you do anything to celebrate Imbolc? I did some small things spread over the first two weeks of February which you can read about here (+ more altar photos):

Also, I'll be pausing my blog for a little while because I need some time off. It's still hibernation season after all. I hope to be back in a month or so. In the meantime, let's participate in Witches' Black Lent, Mini Zine March, and any protest we can! (Some activist ideas on my blog too and I intend to make a zine about it soon).

Some impressions from Imbolc. Brigid was invited and honored, potaoes were mashed (and delicious ☺️), candles were blessed. Hope you all had a lovely imbolc!

FaeNix

We see me, the artist holding a painting of a Phoenix, a friend is smiling impishly in the corner of the frame. The painting is a FaeNix Phoenix, a symbol that held the many roles already fulfilled in my life, wings painted like eyes, feathers were sewing patterns sprayed with a glitter adhesive for stiffness and then sewn onto the canvas itself. We can see the words Woman and Mother as some of the roles seen. We see hands moving over canvas, candles being adhered to the canvas, the details of the painting being seen by only candlelight in a darkened room. Then we see the FaeNix hanging from a ladder, outside, there is snow in the ground, it is Imbloc and my sweet red headed angel of a friend will be burning the FaeNix so that I can just watch and absorb the Magick I made. We see two people filming and Huntur is grinning impishly again. We see them flick a lighter and begin lighting the candles on the FaeNix. And then she burns. The FaeNix burns and burns until all that is left the frame of the painting, a corner still has a few flames left alight. Magick!

Imbolc 2023
FaeNix
My portal painting that gave me the courage to lift on up out of Utah as I walked down a fairly permanent corridor to Thailand. The painting was stitched with golden threads, each feather made from sewing pattern paper, the roles of my life already fulfilled written carefully. And then we burned it!

Third Quarter Moon waxing in Virgo

Jupiter Retrograde

Celtic Tree Month of Rowan

Cloudy and cold

We’ve been in a brutal cold snap, and it’s supposed to get worse over the weekend, with more snow. Then, supposedly, it gets a little milder. At this point, getting above freezing would feel tropical.

It was Imbolc over the weekend, and the full moon. However, according to my planting calendar, the 31st, Saturday, was a planting day, not Imbolc or Candlemass.

I blessed my seeds, and I planted Bachelor’s Buttons in a pot by a sunny, warm window in honor of the stirring beneath. The seeds are from last year, so I don’t know if they will sprout, but I’m giving them a shot. I also repotted a frond of snake plant. The original snake plant was a gift when we still lived in Chicago, when my dad had a heart attack, back in 1964. It moved with us to New York, then to the Cape, then here to the Berkshires. Part of the plant died in an unexpected frost about a year ago, and I’ve had the saved fronds in water since. Here’s hoping they like being back in soil.

Other than that, we are doing our best to keep the plants happy inside. They like the sunny days. I don’t think the begonia will make it, unfortunately. I’ve tried several different locations, and it remains unhappy.

I’m trying to decide what to plant from seed and what to buy as a plant, so I can set a budget. Herbs and flowers will be the focus again this year, with maybe a couple of small, pot-friendly vegetables. I’d like to get a patchouli plant and a dwarf orange, as well. I’m researching floribunda roses, hoping I can find a small one that will thrive in a pot. I’ve had good luck with rugosa, but I think they have to be in the ground. I have more research to do.

How are things in your garden?
