#NowPlaying O'Donel Levy, Simba (Mr. Bongo, 2024 reissue). First released in 1974 on the Groove Merchant label, this LP is a landmark of guitar-based jazz-funk excellence. Owing to its popularity, it’s been reissued several times all over the world since its debut, with original pressings now commanding hundreds of dollars. And it is *that* good.
Uh-oh.... I'm halfway through this I can feel the tug on my wallet...

#NowPlaying Les McCann, Invitation to Openness (Atlantic, 1972). I bought this record when I was in college on the recommendation of the local record store clerk. The vinyl itself was pristine but the cover was a bit jacked up so the price was right. A fast favorite, the deeply soulful, slightly psychedelic approach to jazz has become the standard by which I judge all early fusion. McCann’s group on this one is absolutely top notch (Yusef Lateef, Cornell Dupree, Bill Salter just name a few), and the production is fantastic. It’s just *one of those* records for me.
#NowPlaying Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, Cold As Weiss (Colemine Records, 2022). The sticker on the sleeve says it all: “The World’s Premier Funky Organ Trio.” Get some… https://delvonlamarrorgantrio.bandcamp.com/album/cold-as-weiss-2

Saturday afternoon sounds courtesy of This Celestial Engine - This Celestial Engine, released 2024. Dave Stuart, Roy Powell, and Ted Parsons. Floaty ambient avant-jazz, just perfect. Another new one for me, glad I chanced upon it via the Planet Gong website.
