OSIRIS-REx Completes Sample Collection at Asteroid Bennu and Heads to Asteroid Apophis

OSIRIS-REx has successfully completed its primary sample collection mission on asteroid Bennu and is now en route to asteroid Apophis for a secondary exploration mission. Launched in September 2018, the spacecraft arrived at Bennu in late 2018 and collected samples from its surface in May 2021. The samples are expected to arrive on Earth in September 2023. In April 2022, NASA approved an extension of the mission, now known as OSIRIS-APEX, to explore Apophis, which will approach Earth in April 2029. Apophis, which was previously considered a potential threat to Earth, is now being studied by OSIRIS-APEX for 18 months to analyze its composition. OSIRIS-REx's mission to Bennu faced challenges, including stuck screws that required the creation of specialized tools to open the sample container without contamination. The mission's success promises a time capsule of the early solar system, as Bennu formed 4.5 billion years ago. While the probability of Bennu impacting Earth is low, it is one of the asteroids with the highest potential for impact.
