Salt Mill #Saltaire

#Yorkshire #WestYorkshire

Working hours were 07.30 - 16.15 so the windows were "probably" the lighting for the workplace, as there was a high fire risk from any other Victorian lighting!! I guess during winter some of that time was pretty dark. ( Something else to research!!)

Very interesting from both a history and textile viewpoint - there was an exhibition. Mr Salt already had 5 mills, this mill was large enough to have everything on one site. He accidentally discovered alpaca wool and blended it into his fabrics. The alpaca is a symbol for the label!

Meanwhile he was wanting good accommodation for his workers, and facilities to improve their education.

And the mill is converted into an arts centre and office space, with original features, and a restaurant #Saltaire #Yorkshire #SaltsMill
Then around #Saltaire - a town built for mill workers around the new mill - there's so much history to read about this #Yorkshire
Secondly we arrived at #Saltaire #Yorkshire and walked round the park - of course!
We've done the Saltaire Living Advent Calendar tonight, and as always there are some great windows, but there was a clear winner. #saltaire #bradford #bobmortimer
Last month I visited the UNESCO World Heritage Site Saltaire in Yorkshire. An incredible town built for the factory workers, who didn't get a pub because Salt didn't want them corrupted. Booze is sold in the cafes there. Very EU! @Palky55 #Yorkshire #Photography #Saltaire https://www.flickr.com/photos/wendyn/albums/72177720331097742/
Saltaire

Founded by eminent Victorian industrialist Sir Titus Salt, the UNESCO-Listed village of Saltaire on the edge of Bradford, was a purpose built model village intended to create a close and upright community of workers. Today, its rows of neat cottages and gigantic mill are incredibly well preserved, and home to a thriving artistic community. Salts Mill is now an arts centre and has an extensive collection by local lad David Hockney,
