"Night," Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, 1905.

Čiurlionis (1875-1911), the Lithuanian composer and painter, remains a significant cultural figure in his native land, but is also considered one of the pioneers of abstract art.

He believed he suffered from synesthesia, where the senses cross over one another...one sees sounds, or hears smells, and his painting appears to have been his attempt to deal with it, as many of his works have musical titles.

It's hard to be sure what he was getting at in this work; the shrouded figure in the boat appears to be a lift from Bocklin, especially his famous "Isle of the Dead," and perhaps the bridge means a connection between the living and the dead.

He never explained his art, and died young after overwork ruined his physical and mental health. He never got to see his fame explode and be hailed as a national treasure.

From the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, Kaunas, Lithuania.
