In the wake of election results in SA over the w/e, John Quiggin has a few words to say about it. His penultimate closing words are of interest to me given my thorough dissapointment in federal #Labor politics.

“The Liberals have normalised One Nation, and shifted policies closer, effectively giving their own voters permission to switch. By contrast, Labor has ruthlessly demonised Greens, and has made as few concessions as possible, even though Greens policies are those put forward by Labor until recently. It’s clear which of these is working better politically.

I’ll write more about how the Greens should change their approach.”

I look forward to reading about his ideas on how the Greens can learn lessons from the implosion and leakage of the #LNP and the #SAelections.

Elections D-Day: S Africans have their say and make their mark

The politicians have had their say during campaigning, and two days of special votes have been cast. Now, since dawn on Wednesday, South Africans have been making their way to wait in line at voting stations around the country to make their mark at the ballot box – three Xs in all – in the national and provincial elections, 30 years into democracy. Daily Maverick’s 2024 elections team has been reporting and filming from multiple stations – as well as from a helicopter – as voting gains momentum, with 27,672,264 people registered to vote. Stations will be open until 9pm, then the counting begins to determine who will run the country.
