For the Draconis Combine, it’s hard to argue that any paint scheme is as iconic as the red Sword of Light regiments. I had used that scheme when I painted my old Introductory Box, so for my newer miniatures, I wanted to pick a different unit.
After considering a few options, I settled on painting them as the Ryuken-roku. The Ryuken regiments were created in the 3020s and trained by Wolf’s Dragoons to fight in their style rather than embracing traditional tactics of the DCMS. They suffered great dishonor when they were ordered to fight against the Wolf’s Dragoons to prevent them from leaving the Draconis Combine but have continued to serve as one of the more elite forces within the DCMS since their introduction. Notably, they also have embraced new technologies including the designs acquired from ComStar in the 3030s, so I’d have an excuse to include some of those miniatures in my force.
Each Ryuken regiment uses a paint scheme of dark grey accented with a different color. I chose the Ryuken-roku because their accent color is red which makes the paint scheme more easily recognized as being from the Draconis Combine.
Here’s how I’ve painted my Ryuken-roku miniatures:
For a Ryuken regiment other than the Ryuken-roku, you should be able to just substitute a color and highlight matching the regiment’s scheme for the reds that I used for my process.
