This stands in Hólavallagarður Cemetery, Reykjavik. I took a poor picture 18 years ago, and today I traced over what runes I could make out.

Then I learned it's only 134 years old.

It's the gravestone for Sigurður Vigfússon, Sept. 8, 1828–July 8, 1892, pioneer of Icelandic archaeology who set the standards for research and preservation.

The runestone reads: "Reykjavík erected this stone to Sigurd son Vigfús, head of the Antiquities Museum, and Olinda his wife." #runes #runology #Iceland

Why didn't this occur to me sooner? A really easy way to clean up messy pyrographic work is simply to sand it down! After a few minutes of 150, 220, and 400 grit, it's much more consistent and legible. Go on, guess what it says. #OldNorse #runology #runes #futhark

It actually didn't take very long to carve out the entire sentence. The wood flaked away some of the lines but I knew what I was carving and could keep that in mind for burning later.

Larger letters would have kept the wood intact and left more room for the pyrograph, which got hotter and messier as I went. But it was an educational exercise and I know what I'd do differently next time. (2/2) #runes #runology #OldNorse

Thought I'd try my hand at runecarving, just for fun. I found this stick by the creek that some animal stripped of all bark, so that seemed neat.

I carefully penciled in the runes, hoping not to run out of stick. That worked out fine, but the carving was difficult. I don't know what kind of wood this was but it tended to flake and fracture with detailed work. (1/2)

Today, the Network for #SustainableDSE at #UniOslo held its monthly meeting w/ a presentation by Elisabeth Maria Magin:
"From Stick to Screen - Digital Editions of Runic Inscriptions as Research Tools"
Elisabeth set out to create the technological framework allowing staff at the Runic Archives to create a born-digital, interactive and open-access edition of runic inscriptions from medieval Norway.
