Today I learned that if you’re coughing from post-nasal drip, blowing your nose helps.

I always thought of the front-of-nose and back-of-nose snot as being separate pools. I figured if I could breathe through my nose, and it wasn’t dripping from the front, I didn’t need to blow it. But no, it’s all the same pool. If it’s overflowing in the back, emptying it through the front stops that.

Patients whose allergies cause the sniffles have different fungi living in their noses, compared to healthy people

Allergies that make your nose run and asthma are very common respiratory diseases which are often found together and impose a significant disease burden. Scientists looking for ways to help patients investigated the mycobiome — the world of fungi living in patients’ noses. They found that allergic rhinitis patients’ mycobiomes, whether or not they have asthma, are different to healthy controls in ways that suggest chronic respiratory illness disrupts the mycobiome. These results could eventually help lead researchers to treatments that diagnose problems before clinical symptoms appear and alleviate patients’ symptoms.

Traditionally I am not one who suffers from seasonal allergies too much. I get a little bit of a reaction now and then, but generally speaking it’s not a problem for me.

I am working from home today and I have the windows in the room open. The landscapers came and mowed the lawn a few hours ago. Ever since I have been in mild allergy land. The lawn mower must have kicked up a few gigatons of pollen and shot it right through my open window right into my nose. I’ve been sneezing and coughing and my eyes are itchy and my throat is scratchy and my nose is running.
