Happy new year!
New year’s eve was a cold, almost windless night here, giving the lake a pretty hard freeze.
Today we’re listening to the “lake whales” x— the ice surface cracks from built up pressure and the sound waves get translated and transmuted for hundreds of metres along the frozen surface.
It’s haunting and beautiful.
A special guest showed up in our willow tree yesterday, a belted kingfisher. He posed nicely at the end of a branch for several minutes, long enough for us to find the camera and get the 300mm zoom popped on. Watched him dive into the water below and come up with a small snack from the lake. I had put the camera down by then, lol.
We only see these once a year or two, they’re pretty shy and our stretch of the lake has a lot of human activity.
