Has an athlete ever meant more to a city? Clemente has been gone almost 52 years but his story and spirit are still so alive in Pittsburgh. And I hope that will always be the case. #retire21 https://x.com/OddPittsburgh/โ€ฆ

I always talk too much & run outta room when it's about โšพ๏ธ! Can't help it!
I also want to say that THIS SATURDAY will mark the 50th anniversary of the passing of #RobertoClemente - his plane crashed while trying 2 get supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua - on Dec. 31, 1972.

I hope u all will take a moment 2 acknowledge #THEGREATONE as I do each yr (my mom grew up watching him in Pittsburgh so its tradition)! He was a GREAT human both on & off the field!

To add to @DocTellMeMore 's post below listing his on-field accomplishments (of which there could've been more! His final hit on 9/30/72 was his 3000th) I'd like to add he was/is the greatest #humanitarian in MLB history (maybe one of the greatest in world history, imho). He was the 1st Latin player in the HOF & his number should be universally retired alongside 42. I hate Manfred for a billion reasons (so much he makes me miss Bud! Yikes!) but this is 1 of them #Retire21 #BaseballMastadon #mlb
@DocTellMeMore The 50th anniversary of his death is on Sat! My mom grew up in Pittsburgh in the 50s-60s (my uncle was at Gm 7 of the '60 WS) & she & my grandma used to spend summers at Forbes Field watching her fave player - The Great One! Also worth noting is his 3000th hit was his very last. What could've been? I FIRMLY believe (& hate Manfred for a billion reasons - he kinda makes me miss Bud! Yikes! but that he hasnt done this is 1 reason) that 21 should be universally retired! #Retire21

@Padres All the (currently-not-suspended) Puerto Ricans on the  are wearing it as well, and I think it's a thing on several other teams.

It's so gratifying to see Clemente finally getting the admiration he deserves, because in spite of the fact that we all know his name and how great he was at baseball and at life, he *still* somehow feels underrated as a player and as a person. #retire21
