UN issues new climate warning as El Niño looms

Mark Poynting, Climate researcher, March 23, 2026

"The Earth's climate is further out of balance than at any time in recorded history, the UN's weather agency has warned.

"The World Meteorological Organization says that our planet is gaining much more heat energy than it can release, driven by emissions of warming gases such as carbon dioxide.

"This record 'energy imbalance' heated the ocean to new heights last year and continued to melt our planet's ice caps.

"And scientists fear that a natural warming phase called El Niño – expected to begin later this year - could soon bring further heat records."

#Arizona community hits 110 degrees F, the highest March temperature recorded in the US

THERMAL, Calif. (AP) — "A desert community in southwestern Arizona reached 110 degrees (43.3 C) on Thursday, breaking a record for the highest March temperature recorded in the United States.

The record-setting temperature was recorded just outside #MartinezLakeAZ, in the #YumaDesert, as a winter heat wave scorched the Southwest, according to the National Weather Service. The community is about 145 miles (233 kilometers) west of Phoenix and sits on the Arizona-California border.

The previous record of 108 degrees (42.2 C) had been set in Rio Grande City, Texas, in 1954 and was tied Wednesday by the tiny desert community of North Shore, California.

By Thursday, several more #California locations had hit 108 degrees (42.2 C). Among them were #CathedralCity, near the desert destination of Palm Springs, and the aptly named town of Thermal, northeast of San Diego. The triple-digit temperatures came on the last day of winter.

Thermal was forecast to hit 110 (43.3 C) on Friday and could tie the record.

" 'For some perspective, the average first 105-degree day of the year normally occurs on May 22nd,' NWS said in a statement."

Arizona community records US heat record for March

Abnormal heat on the last day of winter continues to set records in the U.S. Southwest. The Arizona desert community of Martinez Lake hit 110 degrees F on Thursday. It broke the record for highest March temperature recorded in the U.S. The community is about 145 miles west of Phoenix. The blistering record comes as forecasters warned that winter heat across the Southwest will continue into the weekend. The National Weather Service says many other cities in the region are expected to see their earliest 100-plus degree-day on record.

«…In one measurement run, his team divided the area around a data center into three zones based on distance. Zone one, closest to the facility, measured 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than zone two on average.

Wilmeth, the chair of the House Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Innovation, sees data centers through the lens of national security. “If we prevent it, if we stifle it in the United States and in Arizona, Russia will lead. China will lead. This is an international space race for the 21st century.”…»

Imagine that. A race toward overheating the planet and we might not be the ones to win it. Oh, boo hoo. Let them win. If that means we approach extinction more slowly, well, we can live with that.

Record-shattering March scorcher: 70 million to bake in summerlike #HeatDome into weekend

Record-challenging heat will surge across the Southwest this week as a stubborn heat dome sends temperatures into the 90s and even past 100 degrees in some cities, levels more typical of late spring or early summer.

" Much of the Southwest will jump from springlike conditions to summerlike heat this week, with temperatures climbing well into the 90s in many areas and even topping 100 degrees in some locations which are more typical of early summer. The heat dome will have staying power and may not begin to weaken until this weekend to early next week.

A burst of summerlike heat will build across the Southwest this week, pushing temperatures in many areas into the 90s and some past 100 degrees. Monthly records may be challenged, and the heat could hold into the weekend or early next week"

Summerlike heat dome to send #Southwest temperatures soaring past 100 F

A strengthening #HeatDome will send temperatures soaring into the 90s and past 100 degrees across the Southwest, threatening records, accelerating snowmelt and raising #wildfire risk now, then #WaterSupply concerns later.

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist
Published Mar 13, 2026

"Temperatures will climb well into the 90s, with some areas forecast to top 100 degrees Fahrenheit through next week. While those numbers may not seem extreme for the southwestern United States, they are running one to two months ahead of historical averages and could have implications for wildfire risk and water supplies across the interior Southwest later this year.

"A persistent area of high pressure at multiple levels of the atmosphere, known as a heat dome, will intensify in the coming days and may be slow to break down."
