Once upon a time American cities like New York and even #Sacramento #California used a super-inclusive, proportional form of #RankChoiceVoting called the Single Transferable Vote. It's basically #RCV with multiple winners in each race. STV was quite successful at representing a wider array of social and political groups in each city. Until the two big parties (and the courts in Sacramento's case) killed it off. But it's making a comeback in cities like #Portland !

Zohran Mamdani leads NYC Democratic mayoral primary, Andrew Cuomo concedes

Zohran Mamdani has declared victory in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary after Andrew Cuomo conceded the race in a stunning upset. The race’s ultimate outcome will still be decided by a ranked choice count. But Mamdani was in a commanding position after polls closed Tuesday night. The 33-year-old democratic socialist was virtually unknown outside of political circles a year ago. Cuomo was trying to make a comeback from a sexual harassment scandal. He told supporters that he had called Mamdani to congratulate him. He trailed Mamdani by a significant margin in the first choice ballots.

Looking at the NYC Democratic mayoral primary and I gotta say, RCV/IRV is for the birds. #election #ZohranMamdani #NYC #RCV #RankChoiceVoting

@benroyce @deilann @tofugolem @rozeboosje @CptSuperlative I would argue that the problem is the two party primary system where extremists on both sides show up for the primaries leaving the final ballot with only the extremes… and replacing the primary system with rank choice voting on Election Day is the solution

NY Times has an opinion page piece saying that US could change the law to allow "multi-member districts" which would open the door to "Proportional Representation". They go on to speculate how we might see as many as 6 political parties. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/01/14/opinion/fix-congress-proportional-representation.html

Here is how I see it. The fix to gridlock is Democracy 2.0. But there is no direct upgrade path from 1.1 to 2.0
1.1 Legacy Democracy with amendments (US is here)
1.2 #FusionVoting installed post civil war but rolled back (NY is here)
1.3 #RankChoiceVoting (some cities and a couple states have it)
2.0 Multi-member districts representation supported (EU version)

Proportional representation could help restore American democracy.

rfk as Secretary of #Health and Human Services, is going to be the only good thing to come out of the trump admin, but rfk will need to put his foot down in so many areas. i wonder whether he'll be allowed to do the work he needs to.

i think that #rfk will need to fix computers to fix health and human services. ie. #computers cannot be allowed to continue to abuse people if we want to be secure and healthy.

I also think a lot of mental illness stems from two-party politics and the lack of #rankChoiceVoting.... It forces people into fits of dementation whenever they sense that someone is not going to vote for the "lesser evil".

finally it would be ideal if the senate was made up by #sortition, ie. random people plucked out of a nationwide hat, a bit like a jury. Sortition would help to take the money out of politics.

those things INTERSECT with health and human services and rfk would know that, but will he be able to achieve?

(sadly, i don't believe trump will end wars as he promised, he says he can but #blackrock and the dead-heart corporates are really in charge, and often trump lies too)

@ShadSterling @QasimRashid #rankchoicevoting? It gets rid of the primaries where the fanatics nominate who’ll be in the ballot, and allows you to protest vote who you really like as well as who’ll you settle for.

@AndiPopp the election is all about stopping #trump and his #maga… and a reorganization of the #gop from #christifascism and back to fiscal responsibility

So a vote for a third party candidate is a vote for #trump, #maga, and #christifascists

I regret voting for Anderson back in 1980. That turned out to be a vote for #reagan

You will regret voting #3rdparty

Maybe someday we’ll have #rankchoicevoting, and we can vote our conscience as well as the lesser of two evils

Mood going into #portland ‘s first #RankChoiceVoting heh heh
