A clearer view of gravitational-wave signals in pulsar timing arrays

An international team led by researchers at the @mpi_grav in Hannover, Germany, developed an improved noise model to analyze data from the European Pulsar Timing Array.

By addressing known limitations of how the noise contamination is modeled and therefore included in the analysis, the researchers have mitigated a tension between earlier studies of the data and the theoretical predictions.

According to their improved analysis, published in Nature Communications today, the EPTA data now better agree with a gravitational-wave background from coalescing black hole binaries in circular orbits. Additionally, the inferred background amplitude is in less tension with theoretical expectations.

Kosmische Kartographie - Das Gesicht des Gravitationswellenhintergrunds

The European #PulsarTimingArray, a multinational team of #researchers based at different institutes that is using 6 #radiotelescopes across Europe to observe specific #pulsars, recently analyzed the second wave of data they collected.

Their paper, published in #PhysicalReviewLetters, sets more stringent constraints on the presence of #ultralightdarkmatter in the #MilkyWay.

New constraints on the presence of ultralight dark matter in the Milky Way

Dark matter, composed of particles that do not reflect, emit or absorb light, is predicted to make up most of the matter in the universe. Its lack of interactions with light, however, prevents its direct detection using conventional experimental methods.
