OK I declare, in the words of Borat, "Great Success"* πŸŽ‰ (*with minor issues)

3D printed the chassis in 2 parts in grey 'PLA tough", glued together, then assembled.
(single part print was a disaster)

and the case fits together, *and works*! (this was a broken hinge psion)

Minor issues: -
1. the base flexes a bit from the hinges, will try another print in PETG to see if that helps.
2. with the "minimal tree supports" print there is quite a bit of clean up, and some of the overhangs are a bit scruffy.
3. the battery compartment seems to be catching slightly and doesn't fully close.

but... this was a non-working psion with a very fragile inner, and now it works and is usable again.

I'm going to experiment with a PETG print next to see if that helps the flex, might test some support changes too, the other option is to see about getting a JLC3D print done in something else πŸ€”
I'll upload the current model to makerworld, might jot down a blog with all the pics.

Well the 3d printed Psion 5mx chassis looks like a winner. πŸ‘Œ
Just prototype prints at the moment to test shape and fit. Will try with some tough pla or petg tomorrow. Did the prototype in two parts and glued it, will see if I can reorient and support to get a single print.

Trouble is the chassis on this one has deteriorated with age and is fragile now with cracked/missing hinge clips....
Found an almost complete model - I wonder it'll be possible to get a fix 3D printed. πŸ€”
Time to print some sample sections to test/match/size up.
On the other hand... I wonder if it's a better idea to come up with a completely new 'cyberdeck' casing for it?

Um. So after fixing Psion 5mx #1.... I appear to now own two Psion 5mx's, after also fixing the water damaged one I got in case I needed spare parts. πŸ™„πŸ€£

My latest eBay purchase. It's complete apart from the 3.5" software disks (it does have the 5.25" software disks).

I don't have any way of reading 3.5" or 5.25" disks, so the missing disks don't bother me.

It was sold as untested, so I'll see if it works later. It was very well packaged, so if it doesn't work, it won't be due to damage in transit.

One of my many sidequests is to try to get #NetBSD running on one of my #Psion Series 5mx machines. But I have a few issues/thoughts:

  • I'm struggling to find instructions on how to do this. (Can you help, @netbsd ?)
  • Because I can't find any instructions (granted, I was very tired when I tried last night), I'm a little worried that no one has tried this for quite some time.
  • Both of my 5mx units and my working S5 are refusing to read any of my seven Compact Flash cards. Including the one that the netBook uses to boot. I have no idea how to fix that, and I don't really want to buy another 5mx as they ain't cheap.
  • The winning 5mx will get a RAM upgrade to 32MB. (Yes, that's doable.)
  • If I can get something working, then that will encourage others in the #PsionCommunity to try. So we might actually get people running a modern OS on Series 5 machines. Also, as there are a good number of programmers in that community, we might get more eyes on the code.

Finally, if that all works out, then it might be possible to get it running on the (currently unsupported) netBook, too.
