The #clankers are coming for my rent payment now.
I live in subsidized housing for low income disabled people. The community and parent group are kind, caring people and I've mostly had good experiences here. I know the overall director personally. I used to go out with him in drag in the 90s when he was the manager for the property I live in. I know he's a genuinely good person. So this comes as a surprise.
Yesterday I got an email out of the blue for something called LoftLiving.com, asking me to set up an account for payment of my rent from now on. No warning from management, so I thought it might be a scam. I looked into it some and found out that this platform is owned by RealPage, the AI-shilling property management software company that is or has been involved in multiple anti-trust lawsuits, including price fixing accusations. It was a pretty big news story a while back, I remember hearing about it.
I talked to my office manager this morning and she didn't even know they were going to do this, which is why none of us residents got a heads-up. I told her that I don't trust this company and I'm not comfortable dealing with them and would be going back to paper checks. That's unfortunate for office staff because then they have to make a bank run every month. But there is no way in hell I'm giving RealPage my banking information.
She said she was going to contact her higher ups and tell them that residents are concerned and find out what's going on and get back to me. It's been six hours and no return contact so she's probably not made headway.
I find it puzzling that such a caring organization, a non-profit overseen by nuns, would go this route. Somebody probably got dazzled by some sales rep's pitch and didn't do their due diligence looking into this before making a commitment.
But fuck an AI taking my rent payment. Not gonna happen. Plus check out the Yelp reviews. They don't help the company look any better. Especially note the replies by the so-called managers and business owner, with their stock photos and cut and paste replies.
