The historical novel currently being read has a wide vocabulary, accurate geography, and lots of lovely detail about producing arsenic from the residue in tin mines. I'm convinced that the linguistic quirks are caused by accepting the manglings of Msoft Word; it's otherwise hard to account for such gems as "a fission of anxiety", "bare in mind", and "Prey excuse me".
