An Atlas rocket was used, #OnThisDayInHistory in 1958, to place the first #CommunicationsSatellite in orbit. The US felt it had to catch up to the #SovietUnion in space technology, and #ProjectSCORE was its first significant win, albeit a minor one. SCORE was in orbit one month.
