Johnston McCulley is best known as the creator of Zorro. His 1912 novel King of Chaos belongs more to the late Victorian/Edwardian adventure fiction tradition than to the pulp tradition with a definite Ruritania/Prisoner of Zenda flavour.

An obscure clerk is kidnapped and told that he is actually a king.

Outlandish but fun. And there are pirates.
