Wczoraj, w wieku 79 lat, zmarła Birutė Galdikas – jedna z najwybitniejszych badaczek naczelnych i niestrudzona obrończyni orangutanów.

Ponad pięć dekad swojego życia poświęciła badaniom i ochronie tych niezwykłych zwierząt w lasach Borneo. Była uznawana za największy autorytet w dziedzinie orangutanów – gatunku, o którym przed jej badaniami naukowcy wiedzieli zaskakująco niewiele.

Jej działalność wykraczała daleko poza pracę naukową. W 1971 r. założyła słynny obóz badawczy Camp Leakey, gdzie prowadziła najdłuższe na świecie ciągłe badania nad jednym gatunkiem ssaków. Jednocześnie aktywnie angażowała się w ratowanie orangutanów – szczególnie tych osieroconych lub będących ofiarami nielegalnego handlu. Podkreślała, że ich ochrona jest równie ważna jak ich poznanie.

W 1986 r. współtworzyła organizację Orangutan Foundation International, która do dziś działa na rzecz ochrony orangutanów i ich naturalnych siedlisk. Dzięki jej pracy udało się uratować i przywrócić do życia na wolności tysiące zwierząt, a także zwrócić uwagę świata na dramatyczne skutki wylesiania i działalności człowieka.

Birutė Galdikas, obok Jane Goodall i Dian Fossey, była częścią legendarnego trio badaczek naczelnych, które zrewolucjonizowały naszą wiedzę o wielkich małpach i zmieniły sposób, w jaki postrzegamy relację człowieka z naturą.
