Weltweit, für alle, ohne Abo. Klingt großzügig. Der Haken: Musikvideos und Shorts bleiben Premium-exklusiv. PiP funktioniert kostenlos nur bei langen, nicht-musikalischen Videos.
Strategie dahinter: Gewöhnung schaffen, und dann an Grenzen stoßen lassen.

YouTube macht Picture-in-Picture kostenlos. Fast.

PiP ist eines jener Features, über die man nicht nachdenkt, bis man sie hat, und danach nie wieder missen will. Video läuft, man wischt nach oben, das Fenster schwebt in der Ecke, man macht irgendetwas anderes. Das Video läuft weiter.

Bislang war das YouTube Premium vorbehalten. Jetzt nicht mehr. Aber nur teilweise.

YouTube unlocks free picture-in-picture for global users

YouTube has introduced its picture-in-picture (PiP) feature for all users worldwide, allowing videos to continue playing in a small floating window while using other apps. This update removes previous restrictions that limited the feature to certain regions and premium subscribers. As a result, millions of users can now multitask more easily while watching content on their devices.

Picture-in-Picture, a feature added to iOS 9 OVER TEN YEARS AGO, a feature #YouTube decided to lock behind a paywall because *stonks*, is a feature that YouTube is ONLY NOW rolling out for free globally.

But of course there’s a catch: it applies to non-music content only, so YouTube can still sell YouTube Music as part of its Premium subscription offering.

So fuck you very much YouTube, my ad blocker is staying on.
