We regularly talk about the #peacecongress of #Westphalia, but we challenge ourselves to find new angles: so do you know what the #PeaceOfWestphalia has to do with #earlymodern #libraries? Here you can find out: https://hcommons.social/@emdiplomacy/115429418733623573

Early Modern Diplomacy (@[email protected])

Today, on 24 October, is German Library Day. On this day, 377 years ago, the Westphalian peace treaties were signed which ended the Thirty Years' War. On the one hand, this is just a coincidence in dates. The Germany’s national Library Day commemorates the foundation of the first German public library in Hayn (Saxony) in 1829. On the other hand, the Westphalian peace treaties were also relevant for early modern libraries. As this project is in its early stages, we have to wait for the final results. But it’s interesting that again a congress is supposed to be a benchmark for developments that go beyond foreign politics. So, we stay tuned to continue the discussion on the role of #congressDiplomacy in general. (7/7)

We are back from our holiday break with more #emdiplomacy content!
Today, it’s time to introduce Alexander Gerber! He is managing director at the center of historical peace research at the university of Bonn, the place where the documents of the Westphalian #peacecongress are edited. Gerber also writes his PhD on the ceremonial and procedures of the Imperial estates at the #Westphalianpeacecongress.
Thus, it is not surprising, that for @emdiplomacy Gerber is looking at towns and cities as sphere of #earlymodern #diplomacy. (2/5)

At the #peacecongress of #Westphalia most diplomats lamented the rain. The papal mediator, Fabio Chigi, did not only recorded in his diary, when it rained. He even wrote a poem on the weather in Münster, calling the city “home of the clouds”.
He was not the only diplomat who constantly complained about the bad weather in #Westphalia.
Maybe only those who could complain about the weather in Münster were real #diplomats at the #WestphalianPeaceCongress?

Just discovered another #emdiplomacy #openaccess publication: Niels May's study on the ceremonial at the #peacecongress of #Westphalia is available here (in German):

Zwischen fürstlicher Repräsentation und adliger Statuspolitik

Of course, all diplomats had to report regularly, while permanent diplomats reported on court gossip, cultural and political peculiarities & developments, diplomats at a #peacecongress focussed much more on the negotiations. This gives their reports a different character. (5/5)

For example, at a #peacecongress wasn’t clear which language should be used or who would decide in ceremonial conflicts. This had to be negotiated, while at a court these questions didn’t arise.

A #peacecongress or an assembly of the estates were non-permanent institutions with their own set of rules that had to be agreed on. Often the duration of the event was not clear beforehand and in the case of peace congresses there was always the possibility of failure. (3/x)
