My vacation destination was not what most would consider a paradise. The ground was sandy in coloration, yes, but the rough, damp surface bore little resemblance to the ocean-kissed grains upon a tropical beach. The heat was oppressive as a desert, yet the humidity was as prominent as a rain forest. A haze hung in the air and obscured the horizon, which created the illusion of this landscape being endless.

While some could tolerate all of those, many of them would be repulsed by the smell. This was not a fresh sea breeze; this was a stagnant, salty stench that clung to my nose and seemed only to intensify the longer I stayed. It came from seemingly everywhere at once, emanating from the very dampness of the ground itself, as if omnipresent and omnipotent.

I was somewhere upon the sole of a creature far too large for me to fully comprehend, too small to be felt in any way. Causing an itch would imply far more significance than my presence carried here; I was very much at risk of being drowned in sweat if I ventured too close to one of those glands. Bits of debris, too small for the titan to notice, were a deadly hazard if I ventured too close.

Despite all the reasons to be disgusted and horrified by this environment, I loved it. I was free from everything associated with being a person. Everything overwhelmed in the best way, from the scent to the sheer scale of the environment. At any moment my (unaware?) host could stand up and obliterate me beneath footsteps that’d shake my entire world. Even with that knowledge, I dropped to all fours and kissed the sole in an infinitesimal act of thanks.
