Jury begins deliberations in murder trial of former Michigan police officer

Jurors have begun deliberating over whether former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr was justified when he shot and killed Patrick Lyoya, a 26-year-old Congolese immigrant, in April 2022. Lyoya was lying facedown underneath Schurr when the officer shot him in the back of his head. Schurr’s attorneys have argued he acted in self-defense after Lyoya resisted arrest. Prosecutors have argued that the use of deadly force was unreasonable and unnecessary. Schurr is charged with second-degree murder and faces up to life in prison if convicted. Jurors also have the option to convict him of the lesser charge of manslaughter, which carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
