Watched Emily the Criminal (2022), have some thoughts (no spoilers).
Frighteningly good. Felt unique, though the story beats perhaps were not. A testament to Aubrey Plaza for making her character both fully relatable while having a dark inner voice that is only slowly revealed.
I liked the lower budget feel: found locations, minimally worked up interiors, small core cast with a ring of characters around them that fleshed out the polar opposite sides of the story. Glad it streamed so I could watch it, but wish it could have had a theatrical release that spawned more awareness and conversation.
I have crazy fight/flight these days and literally stopped watching during an intense scene. Still, it was so compelling and I needed to know what happened next, to understand Emily. Watching to the end was the worth the temporary discomfort.
Quote of the film: “I just want to be free. I just, you know, I want to experience things.“
I find that insanely familiar.
