Resilient nylon-11 film generates electricity from pressure and survives repeated runovers

RMIT University researchers have developed a flexible nylon-film device that generates electricity from compression and keeps working even after being run over by a car multiple times, opening the door to self-powered sensors on our roads and other electronic devices. The paper is published in the journal Nature Communications.

Yes it’s obvious really, but we still need #petrochemicals for #plastics, #pharmaceuticals, #resins etc. We just need to stop wasting it on power generation.

We could get by with a small fraction of what we use now.

One test of a protocol or proposal is to ask the question: What if everyone did that?

Looking at the commercialization of #MotheringSunday by #LEGO that was on my telly today, the question arises. What if everyone bought LEGO Botanicals flowers for Mothering Sunday?

LEGO would have saturated the market and there would be no market for them next year. A lot of people would have permanent plastic flowers in their home all year around.

And a lot of plastic flowers would get thrown away (or clog up the charity shops) by the recipients who turn out to disdain artificial flowers. LEGO hasn't (to my knowledge) yet reported reaching its goal of only using recyclable #plastics, moreover.

Maybe the best present for Mothering Sunday, if one even celebrates it by buying things from shops in the first place, is something easily recyclable and that won't hang around for years.

Microplastics and nanoplastics in urban air originate mainly from tire abrasion, research reveals

Although plastic particles in the air are increasingly coming into focus, knowledge about their distribution and effects is still limited. Chemical analyses from Leipzig now provide details from Germany for the first time: Around 4% of the particulate matter consists of plastic. Around two-thirds of this comes from tire abrasion.

that's amazing work and very life-like. I know what you mean about the materials and it's a pity, because I feel like that's unnecessary. There's a tremendous body of work on substitutes for polymers that are currently made from petrochemical feedstocks, but it all remains very small-scale and mostly academic because the petrochemical industry does NOT want to interrupt the pipeline they've constructed: straight out of the Earth and flowing into every conceivable consumer product.
