Recently growing pet peeve: People sharing a screenshot of some social network twoot. A few pixels of irrelevant avatar, a name and a short message.

The part that annoys me is that it's encoded as a JPEG or PNG and instead of using 200 bytes for the message and name it uses 1024 times that for the image.

Instead of repeating it in the alt text to make it accessible, just frigging omit the screenshot. Paste the fucking text. It's what quotation marks are for.

Nobody with a dialup modem would've ever thought this was anything but pure mindboggling insanity.

Bothers the shit out of me and I refuse to boost any such, no matter the message.

What is that "though" doing there? These two states are not inherently contradictory! Either the moon is at a phase where it normally sets at or after dawn OR it isn't, and the moon shouldn't be up at first light, and this very mainstream litfic novel is about to turn magic realism on me. And I'm pretty sure THE ESSEX SERPENT isn't about to do that on page 355.

FAIL!

Why is it that authors who portray visually impaired people in their books always portray them as having had surgery or some miracle to give them sight as the way to go? Why not have a totally or partially blind person be the genius detective or whatever? Why must that person have once been blind but can now see? #Blind #BlindFrustration #PetPeeve

My most inconsequential pet peeve:
People typesetting temperatures wrong.
The unit symbols are °C or °F. You set a space between the number and the unit symbol. A degree sign right next to a number is an angle.

Using first »from« and then »–« instead of »to« is also frowned upon. Or, using an en-dash for numeric ranges in running prose in general.
So:
»from 10 °C to 25 °C«.
