Watching an art programme where the judges select a winning piece that looks nothing like the subject for which they say of the artist "she doesn't care that much about making a portrait as she does a great painting" and I can't help but notice that the programme is called "Portrait Artist Of The Year" and not "Good God, Who's That Supposed To Be Of The Year."

Caught up with the first episode of the new series of Portrait Artist of the Year. One of the sitters was Yungblud who I only knew of because my niece is apparently a big fan but who I'd never seen before. The canvas certainly loved his look and he seemed like a lovely person too.

Late Night portrait painting. Was watching Portrait Artist of the Year and it’s always inspiring. Did this of Barrie Humphries, aka Dame Edna. I think I really got a great painting and a great likeness.

Well, at least Sky have saved me an hour bothering to watch the Lorraine Kelly commision. #paoty

Bracing ourselves for the likely baffling judges decision to come on Portrait Artist of the Year.

Very controversial Portrait Artist of the Year episode just now where the judges - and I can hardly bring myself to say this - picked pieces that actually looked like the people they were supposed to be. The horror!

Rosie Jones as guest sitter on Portrait Artist Of The Year has brought in a "Piss On Pity" t-shirt.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piss_On_Pity

"'Piss On Pity' was first deployed during the 1990 and 1992 Block Telethon protests [...] in the UK [and highlighted] poor representation of disabled folks [...] activists wanted to be seen and included in society on their own terms. [Pity], while seeming to be a positive, helpful emotion, actually is derogatory."

Of course, it wouldn't be #PAOTY without the judges picking as winner the piece of work least like the person it's supposed to be. It's Portrait Artist of the Year, not Impression Of Some Inner Turmoil In A Bold But Puzzling Style We Can't Explain But Are Too Pretentious To Overlook And Don't Want To Look Like We Don't Know What We're Talking About of the Year, FFS.

The sitters on Portrait Artist of the Year generally sit still and quietly - at least according to the TV edit - but I love that Dan Snow has been shown talking about Ernest Shackleton to the artists and other attendees.

On Portrait Artist of the Year right now they've actually got three sitters we've heard of. Practically unprecedented.
