I've seen otters in the pond a couple times now, but only very briefly. I went down just now to set up the tank and pump to do an alum treatment, both to settle some of the particulates and to lower the pH. I looked across the pond and this otter was snoozing there in the sun. It didn't wake up even after I banged the cart around a little bit getting set up.
I snapped this very zoomed in shot with my phone, and then decided to see if I could get a little closer. When I was about 30 feet away and it still hadn't moved, I had an "oh shit" moment, thinking that maybe it was dead and then wondering how or why it would have died. (Maybe someone was putting out poison or something?)
Just as I was about to snap a better photo, it perked up looked at me with a "oh man, did you really have to interrupt me? I was having the best dream." And slipped into the water.
