The center of Óbuda (Alt-Ofen), the old Buda, one of the three cities that formed today’s Budapest.
Budapest, 1970. A rather distinctive 'stadium' shaped building in Budapest's III district, Óbuda. At this time silk buttons were made here, although it looks also like a residential building. Today it houses the Hungarian Wine Academy.

Budapest, 1955. Not generally known, but the creation of Budapest as a single city in 1873 was the union of three cities, not two: Pest, Buda, and Óbuda, or old Buda in English. Located to the north of Buda along the Danube, Óbuda was where the Romans settled at around 41 AD. You can still visit the ruins of their site today in what is known as Aquincum.

Budapest, 1971. People often criticise the large housing estates of the Soviet era countries like Hungary. But what they don't see is the aging, run-down, energy inefficient housing stock it replaced which was incapable of housing a growing, increasingly prosperous and urban population.

Budapest, 1968. People like to sneer at Soviet-era housing estates, but when you have cold, damp, and crumbling housing stock such as show below, coupled with a growing population, then is it any wonder these were replaced with high-rise, cookie-cutter mass housing.

Budapest, 1975. It may not have looked like much in the mid-1970's, but this is one of Budapest best restaurants, and where the famous Hungarian early 20th century writer, Gyula Krúdy dined, Founded in 1899, it's now called the Kéhli Inn - as opposed to the Bridge Inn as in this photo. - It remains a 'must visit' to all those that love traditional Hungarian cuisine.
