A great first day at #OW2con2026 in Paris!

OpenProject's @RosannaSibora, @wielinde, and Christophe Bliard joined the open source community for insightful discussions on this year's theme: Open Source and Open Models to Drive European Sovereignty.

It was inspiring to exchange ideas on how openness, transparency, and collaboration can strengthen Europe's digital future.

This week our @openproject team is attending the @ow2 #ow2con in Paris. If you would like to chat with us, feel free to approach us.

It’s great to exchange with the community to gather new insights on their needs, use cases and pains.

We also discuss a lot the topic of leading change within organisations and guiding users on the journey from closed source to open source.

The filter is gone
The friction that maintained contribution quality for 30+ years has been removed. We need intentional replacement, not nostalgia.

This is not about Al
It's about context, intent, and relationship. The projects getting this right aren't banning tools.
They're redesigning the social contract.

We don't need more code
Wo need more care
Layers 3, 4, and 5 of the contribution stack, context, intent, relationship are human layers. They cannot be automated. Only cultivated.

"Writing code has become effortless; reading and verifying code remains profoundly difficult. Open source is straining under this asymmetry." - Philippe Ensarguet

AI Slop vs. Open Source: Why the Next Contribution Crisis Is Already Here OW2con'26

Open source was never just about code, it was about care, context, and trust. But AI-generated contributions are flooding projects with plausible-looking noise: slop PRs, hallucinated bug reports, vibe-coded patches no one understands. We are having multiple testimonials of examples where maintainers are overwhelmed. This talk argues we must redefine "contribution" beyond lines of code. In the age of AI slop, the real signal is human judgment, review rigor, and community stewardship. We don't need more code, we need more care.

Philippe Ensarguet on AI slop and open source:

The beautiful lie....
The open source model is built on a beautiful lie: code is the contribution
It never was
The code was a proxy, for understanding, for investment, for belonging The friction was the filter

When I submitted my proposal for an @[email protected] EU Policy Update to #OW2con in February, the @[email protected]’s #TechSovereignty Package was expected to be published at the end of March. Things changed, so today, I presented my takeaway of the draft documents that we saw leaked last week. 🧡1/6 #ow2con
All in all, I'm carefully positive, but the devil is, as usual, in the details.
Commission Vice-President @HennaVirkkunen will join the European Parliament’s ITRE committee for a hearing about the proposal tomorrow afternoon (expect from ~16:00), streaming here:β€¨πŸ“Ί https://multimedia.europarl.europa.eu/en/webstreaming/itre-committee-meeting_20260603-1430-COMMITTEE-ITRE

Committee on Industry, Research and Energy Ordinary meeting - Multimedia Centre

The multimedia platform of the European Parliament is the official public available repository of the media production of the Secretariat of the European Parliament, managed by the Directorate-General for Communication (DG COMM).

🟠 Critical infrastructure, sectors, and data only?
The Commission uses the term "critical" a lot, and while this is generally understandable, the question remains if certain measures and obligations will only be mandatory for critical infrastructure, in critical sectors, and for certain categories of sensitive data.

🟠 Chips Act 2.0: can it really stimulate demand?
It remains to be seen if the Commission is ambitious enough and whether Europe can indeed create chip fabs that can keep up with international competition – this demand is also needed to finance some of the proposed measures.
