I saw a sharp-shinned hawk in New Mexico nail a Woodhouse's scrub jay. The hawk held the jay on the ground for a few seconds while it thrashed its last. Then it rested while cloaking its prey with its wings outstretched. Then it carried the jay away for breakfast. I wish I'd gotten a better flight photo, but it does show the gist of the moment. #birds #birding #hawk #NaturePhotography #NewMexico #NatureRedInToothAndClaw

Yesterday: javelina in the yard, excited dachshunds watching through the window. I had just refilled the bird feeder, intentionally spilling some seed on the ground for pigeons and quail. They must have been nearby, watching. #natureredintoothandclaw

Cut the dogs' walk short when coyotes started yipping in the shiggy, as they do when they score a meal. I didn't think they were dangerously close but they weren't far away either. Discretion/valor/etc. Must have been a late breakfast for the pack ... I know because I checked the time. Hope it wasn't a neighbor's dog or cat. #natureredintoothandclaw #bigseikolittledick

Sometimes you see a wild fox and think "It's so cute and playful! Maybe it'll let me pet it?". Then there are times when you catch a look and realize that's a bad idea. This was one of those times -- a fox cub gnawing on its hard-won snack of a seagull wing with menace in its eyes, daring anyone to get near.
