Are you interested in making a significant contribution to the conservation of Redshank and associated saltmarsh species? In England, recent estimates indicate that 66-75% of Redshank breed on saltmarsh, however, they are experiencing long-term declines (53% between 1985-2011). With funding from Natural England, we therefore have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual with energy, enthusiasm, and initiative to progress the conservation of Redshank and associated saltmarsh species. What's the role about?  You will bring your knowledge and experience of coastal habitats and associated species to drive forward the recovery of breeding redshank in England. The project will bring together work for Redshank and other key species on saltmarsh in the Wash, North Norfolk Coast, Humber, Solway, Morecambe Bay and Ribble. This will include: Co-ordinating breeding redshank surveys for the Humber and the North Norfolk Coast. Completing a redshank audit to clarify their population, trends and threats Reviewing the condition and importance of saltmarshes in relation to breeding birds Completing conservation advice packages Developing a policy and advocacy position in relation to breeding saltmarsh birds You will be able to build positive working relationships with a range of stakeholders; persuade and inspire while remaining accurate and evidence-based and has a passion for finding solutions and identifying positive outcomes for nature and people. This role offers a great opportunity for you to develop your skills and experience whilst making a real contribution to nature conservation. What we need from you? Estate Worker - Cumbria Coast Reserves | RSPB

We are looking for an enthusiastic and practical person to help deliver a program of estate and conservation work at our Cumbria Coast Reserves, based at Campfield Marsh. This reserve comprises 360 hectares of peat bog, fen, wet grassland and saltmarsh on the south shore of the Solway Estuary.  A new Countryside Steward Scheme capital works programme has recently funded installation of a new wetland system of scrapes ditches and sluices on the wet grassland, enabling a more dynamic management regime for the benefit of breeding waders such as lapwing and redshank.  Work will also be required at Hodbarrow and St. Bees Head reserves as required, including scrub management, fencing, brushcutting and other practical tasks to help maintain the internationally important seabird colonies and habitats at these sites. The role will involve use of powered and tractor mounted machinery.  Maintenance of the scrapes, paths, sluices and fences including a new 6km combination barrier / electric anti-predator fence around the farm will be the main responsibility of the post holder.  Assisting our graziers with cattle movements, removing stray sheep from the saltmarsh and keeping stock and machinery use records will also be required.  Competency in administration tasks and computer use would be an advantage. The successful applicant will join a small team working on the reserves and will need to be adaptable to undertake work as required.  The timing of the work during the week will be flexible, though some tasks will need to be specifically timed to fit in with other staff and work requirements. Campfield Marsh attracts around 12000 visitors per year, and the modest visitor infrastructure including a hide, paths, screens and viewpoints will be regularly maintained to a high standard by the post holder. As well as a wide set of practical skills, the post holder will also need to be a good team worker with good communication, organisational and inter-personal skills  Essential skills include: You will have knowledge and experience of practical habitat and estate management. You will have a proven track record of working of completing work alone and working within a varied team. Comfortable managing volunteers from a range of backgrounds Be willing to assist with predator control to benefit ground nesting birds A suitable licence allowing you to drive a car/utility vehicle on UK public roads. Desirable qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience: Lantra or equivalent qualification in using equipment such as brushcutter, tractor and ATV, PA1/6 pesticides. Knowledge of servicing and maintaining vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment to agreed standards. Experience of staff or volunteer recruitment and line management. Implementing and updating health and safety records and assessments. Reasonable birdwatching knowledge and experience of biological surveys Additional information: This role will involve lone working and working in remote locations. This role will require occasional weekend, early morning and evening working so will need someone who is able to be flexible.
