Teaching AI Ethics

Update: since I wrote this original post covering the nine areas, I've expanded each one into a complete article. Have a read through this post, and then when you're ready to dive deeper into AI ethics, check out the full series here. If you linked to this post as part of a course or university resource, I suggest updating your links with the complete series. https://leonfurze.com/ai-ethics/ As we head into the start of Term 1 it's already looking like Artificial Intelligence is going to be [โ€ฆ]

1. Reactive Machine AI "stems from statistical math and can analyze vast amounts of data to produce a seemingly intelligent output."

2. Limited Memory AI - "can recall past events and outcomes and monitor specific objects or situations over time.

Subtypes of this include:
A. Generative AI: ChatGPT etc
B. Virtual assistants and chatbots: Siri, Alexa etc
C. Autonomous vehicles

Far too often all this gets confused with genAI.

Traditional AI, also known as narrow AI, operates using classical data science and a systematic approach. It's focused on prediction or classification tasks based on existing data within predefined boundaries. #TraditionalAI #NarrowAI

In other words: If you want people to get health care or the like, they cannot get it this way, because it is against these roles'n'goals.

Another example:
#AIโ€”or more precisely, it's current form #narrowAIโ€”has the primary task to *guess* something. It has gotten so good at guessing in some subjects that it can be mistaken for knowledge.

"We have a problem, but #AI will solve it"
โ€“ "How?"
"I don't know. But AI will solve it. That's why we use AI. AI will figure it out."
โ€“ "I have a hunch, you are confusing AI with a wishing well."

๐Ÿ’ก Fun fact: Virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa are examples of Narrow AI, but whatโ€™s next for Artificial Intelligence?

Explore the evolution of AI from Narrow AI to AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) and beyond in our latest article. Discover what makes tools like GPT-4 stand out in the AI landscape!

@strangetomato I think you mean #ArtificialGeneralIntelligence (as #AI , #narrowAI ) is already here in various forms. I certainly believe #AGI is technically feasible. I even think that there will likely be (greater than 50% chance) #AI as capable as average people at most intellectual tasks within 5 years.

It would be very hard to halt of the progress of #AITechnology but not impossible.

I think there needs to be #AIregulation but I agree that there is risk in getting it wrong.

Is only artificial general intelligence (AGI) "true AI"? This discussion seems so theoretical. Whilst we are discussing #AGI, the spreading of #AI continues unrelentingly and AI will change our #Society, the #Environment and even ourselves. Even "no-so-true AI", or #NarrowAI, can have severe ethical and other consequences.

ChatGPT is not "true AI." A computer scientist explains why

Large language models are an impressive advance in AI, but we are far away from achieving "true AI" โ€” that is, human-level capabilities.
