@ShaulaEvans Another bug related fact is New Zealand's competition to be elected as #NZBugOfTheYear!

Voting is done online so probably determined by humans but I guess New Zealand Entomological Society are open to any votes that meet their criteria.

2026 Bug of the Year Nominees – New Zealand Bug of the Year

Another ngaro huruhuru (NZ native bee) seen in my garden 😊

I have a few patches of lawn that I’ve let grow really long, and these little yellow flowers* are a favourite of these tiny bees.

I also have planted wildflower pollinator blends, but I only ever see bumble bees and honey bees in those. In my garden these native bees seem to prefer a patch of lawn gone wild.

#NZBugOfTheYear #BugOfTheYear2023 #bugoftheyear

* similar but smaller than a dandelion flower, might be hawksbeard or catsear

Exciting news for naturalists in #Aotearoa: #NZBugOfTheYear is here! I wish I could vote. (The astonishingly well-dressed #NorthIsland #LichenMoth really caught my eye -- also a fan of the #WΔ“tāpunga and #AntlionLacewing ...) https://bugoftheyear.ento.org.nz/
