October 11, 1987 - More than half a million people flooded Washington, D.C., demanding civil rights for gay and lesbian Americans, now celebrated each year as National Coming Out Day.

Many of the marchers objected to the government's response to the AIDS crisis, as well as the Supreme Court's 1986 decision to uphold sodomy laws in Bowers v. Hardwick.

The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt was first displayed there, bringing national attention to the impact of AIDS on gay communities, a tapestry of nearly two thousand fabric panels each a tribute to the life of one who had been lost in the pandemic.

There is freedom and joy in living your own truth. Everyone comes out on their own terms. For some, safety is a concern. If you're not ready to come out, for any reason, that's okay. There is a whole community waiting to love and support you when you're ready.

Happy #NationalComingOutDay . It didn’t exist when I came out / was outed. There were haters then, there are haters now, and I am STILL HERE. I say this not to diminish the experience of any 2SLGBTQIA+ person of any age. On the contrary, I encourage—even implore—you to take heart.

There have always been Two Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual people. There always will be. Celebrate, even if to say only to yourself, “Yes. I am.”

In last night's dream I was shopping in a thrift store and found a white shirt and fuchsia pants covered in colourful sequins, which, on inspection, had long ago been a costume from a musical at my home town theatre (possibly Technicolor Dreamcoat). And I decided I didn't need them, until it occurred to me that they would be the perfect thing to wear in next year's pride parade.

Anyway, happy Coming Out Day.
